About Virginia Union Football

Virginia Union Panthers football is a storied HBCU program and a consistent power in NCAA Division II as a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Over the program’s history, the Panthers have won numerous CIAA championships and made multiple NCAA Division II playoff appearances, including a 9–2 season with a playoff win in 2022. Under head coach Alvin Parker, Virginia Union has continued to be a CIAA contender capable of postseason success.

The Panthers play home games at Hovey Field on Virginia Union University’s campus in Richmond, Virginia. With an approximate capacity of 7,500, the stadium creates a close-to-the-field environment that fits the program’s traditional, community-centered feel. Game days at Hovey Field are known for an authentic HBCU atmosphere, where school spirit in maroon and steel gray shows up in the stands and the band helps set the rhythm of the day.

Within the CIAA, matchups can carry extra weight in the standings, but the marquee rivalry is the in-state showdown with the Virginia State Trojans—a cornerstone HBCU matchup in Virginia with deep regional and cultural significance. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Virginia Union Panthers Football tickets early is the smartest move.
