Sunset Blvd. Tickets

If you're looking for Sunset Blvd. tickets, you're planning an evening with Andrew Lloyd Webber's sweeping film-noir musical drama, based on Billy Wilder's 1950 film Sunset Boulevard. With a 1993 West End premiere, a Tony Award-winning original Broadway production, and a recent Jamie Lloyd revival that drew major acclaim, Sunset Blvd. remains a powerful story of fame, obsession, and old Hollywood illusion.

This page covers everything you need — from what the show is and what to expect, to finding the right seats and buying with complete confidence.

Show Information

Sunset Blvd. premiered on July 12, 1993, at the Adelphi Theatre in London's West End. The musical is based on the 1950 Billy Wilder film Sunset Boulevard, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics and book by Don Black and Christopher Hampton. The acclaimed recent revival was reimagined and directed by Jamie Lloyd.

The show is a through-sung musical drama with a film-noir edge, following a story set in Hollywood in 1949–1950. The recent Jamie Lloyd-directed Broadway revival at the St. James Theatre concluded its limited run, and the musical continues to be performed in revivals, regional stagings, and international productions worldwide. The running time is approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes, including one intermission.

The original Broadway production opened at the Minskoff Theatre on November 17, 1994, starring Glenn Close as Norma Desmond, and went on to win seven 1995 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Actress in a Musical. The Jamie Lloyd revival also earned major recognition, including multiple Olivier Awards in its West End run, with Nicole Scherzinger winning the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical before the production received Tony recognition on Broadway.

Story Summary

Set in Hollywood, California, in 1949–1950, Sunset Blvd. follows Joe Gillis, a struggling young screenwriter whose life changes when he stumbles into the decaying mansion of Norma Desmond. Norma is a faded silent-film legend still living inside the grandeur of her past, convinced that her return to the screen is just within reach.

As Joe becomes financially, romantically, and psychologically entangled in Norma's world, the glamour of old Hollywood gives way to manipulation, delusion, and obsession. Max von Mayerling, Norma's devoted butler and former director, protects the fantasy surrounding her, while Betty Schaefer, a young script reader, offers Joe a glimpse of a different future.

The musical explores faded glory, ambition, exploitation, self-deception, and the illusion of show business. Sunset Blvd. stands fully on its own, so no prior familiarity with the 1950 film is needed to follow and enjoy the story.

Story Highlights

The score features some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most cinematic writing, with lush melodies that capture both old Hollywood grandeur and noir-style tension.

• `"With One Look"` — Norma Desmond's grand declaration of star power is one of the musical's defining moments. The number gives the leading actress a soaring showcase as Norma insists that her screen presence still commands the world.
• `"As If We Never Said Goodbye"` — Norma's emotional return to the Paramount studio lot is among the score's most beloved ballads. It captures her longing, nostalgia, and belief that the old magic of film can still come back to life.
• `"Sunset Boulevard"` — Joe's driving title number gives voice to the seductive emptiness of Hollywood dreams. Its cynical energy helps define the show's film-noir atmosphere.
• `"The Perfect Year"` — This romantic duet between Norma and Joe unfolds during a New Year's Eve celebration. It highlights the complicated intimacy and imbalance at the center of their relationship.
• `"The Lady's Paying"` — A lively ensemble number, this sequence follows Norma lavishing Joe with an extravagant new wardrobe. It brings a burst of style and momentum while showing how deeply Joe is being drawn into her world.
• `"Too Much in Love to Care"` — Joe and Betty share a tender duet that reveals another emotional path for Joe. The song contrasts sharply with the darker pull of Norma's mansion.
• `"New Ways to Dream"` — This reflective piece evokes the lost magic of the silent-film era. It adds emotional texture to Norma's connection to the past and the world that made her a star.

Sunset Blvd. Seating Guide

Sunset Blvd. is staged in traditional theater venues, from major Broadway houses to regional and international theaters of varying sizes. Where you sit can shape how you experience the noir atmosphere, the vocal performances, and the visual design of each production.

Best Seats for Sunset Blvd.

The best seats for Sunset Blvd. balance vocal clarity, full-stage perspective, and proximity to the performers.

• Best value: Upper mezzanine and rear orchestra sections often provide strong sightlines at a lower price point, especially for theatergoers who want to take in the full staging and design.
• Closest to the stage: Front orchestra sections put you nearest to the performers, giving the production a more intimate and immersive feel.
• Best overall experience: Mid-orchestra and front mezzanine sections usually offer the strongest balance of proximity and full-stage visibility, making them a favorite choice for many musical theater fans.
• For groups: Coordinate contiguous seats early, since blocks in popular orchestra and mezzanine sections can sell through quickly for in-demand performances.

Getting Ready for Show Night

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation makes the full experience run smoothly from arrival through the final bow.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Cell service around the theater can be congested on busy performance nights. Save your tickets to your phone's wallet or screenshot them before heading out so you're ready at the door without needing a signal.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is standard at most theaters. A portable battery pack is worth having, especially if you're combining the show with dinner or other activities.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain. Theater doors open well before the show begins; arriving early gives you time to find your seats and settle in before the house lights go down — and avoids the disruption of late seating, which many theaters restrict.
• Plan for the intermission. Sunset Blvd. runs approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes, including one intermission. Lines for concessions and restrooms can build quickly immediately after the act break.
• Know the venue's phone and photography policy. Photography and recording are not permitted during the performance, so silence your phone and keep it put away once the show begins.
• For older audiences. The musical contains adult themes and violence, making it best suited for older theatergoers.
