About Long Island University Sharks Basketball

Long Island University Sharks basketball competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Northeast Conference (NEC), representing LIU from Brooklyn, New York. The program’s lineage includes two national championships recognized at the time — the 1939 and 1941 National Invitation Tournament titles — and a long history tied to the former LIU Blackbirds era. In the modern conference era, LIU has captured the Northeast Conference championship, including a recent NEC Championship that marked the program lineage’s 7th NEC title and earned a return to the NCAA Tournament.

The program’s history is anchored by legendary coach Clair Bee, a Hall of Fame figure who built LIU into a national power in the 1930s and 1940s and is credited with key contributions to basketball rules and strategy. Sherman White stands out as a star player of the early 1950s and one of the most talented players of his time. In today’s era, Rod Strickland — a former NBA guard — leads the Sharks men’s basketball program as head coach.

On game nights, the Sharks play at Steinberg Wellness Center (also referred to as the LIU Athletic Center / Steinberg Wellness Center gymnasium) in Brooklyn. With an intimate, smaller-venue feel and a capacity of approximately 1,800–2,500, the building creates a close-to-the-court setting where every possession feels louder and every run swings the atmosphere quickly.

In NEC play, conference matchups drive the biggest nights and the most in-demand dates. Rivalries and repeat postseason paths add intensity — including meetings with Wagner College and Saint Francis (Pennsylvania), along with recent championship-level conference clashes against Mercyhurst. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Long Island University Sharks Basketball tickets early is the smartest move.
