This page covers everything you need — from understanding how Jimmy V Classic works to finding the right tickets and knowing what to expect when you arrive.

About Jimmy V Classic

The Jimmy V Classic is an annual men’s college basketball showcase held in early December at Madison Square Garden in New York City. First held in 1995, the event honors Jim Valvano, the legendary NC State head coach who led the Wolfpack to the 1983 NCAA championship and later founded the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Beyond the on-court action, the Classic is closely tied to ESPN’s Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research, amplifying Valvano’s legacy each December.

On the floor, the Jimmy V Classic is typically a men’s doubleheader—two high-profile, non-conference regular-season games featuring four teams under standard NCAA Division I rules. There’s no bracket and no tournament trophy; the results count toward each team’s record and can influence rankings and NCAA Tournament résumés. The event’s purpose is charitable, with proceeds supporting the V Foundation for Cancer Research, while a national-TV win at Madison Square Garden carries real prestige and early-season momentum.

The Classic has regularly featured blue-blood and traditionally strong programs, with past participants including Duke, Iowa, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Maryland, Villanova, and Virginia. Madison Square Garden itself adds to the experience—opened in 1968, with an approximate basketball capacity of 19,500, it’s an iconic venue above Penn Station known for its intimate bowl and storied college basketball atmosphere. If you’re planning to attend Jimmy V Classic, browsing tickets early is the smartest move.

How Much Do Jimmy V Classic Tickets Cost?

Jimmy V Classic tickets typically range from around $40–$100 for upper-level seats to $150–$400+ for lower-bowl and premium sideline seats, with premium packages running higher. Courtside seats and hospitality options can command top-tier pricing.

Pricing is most influenced by the strength and national profile of the matchups, the participation of blue-blood programs, and the Madison Square Garden premium. Prices can also rise as game day approaches, and seat location relative to the court is a major factor—center-court and lower-bowl placements are typically in higher demand than upper-level corners and baselines.

No hidden fees. At Box Office Ticket Sales, the price you see is the price you pay. All fees are shown before checkout — no surprise charges when you reach the final step.

• Closest to the action: Courtside seats and lower-bowl sideline seats — feel the pace of the game up close
• Best overall view: Center-court lower-bowl sidelines and courtside — premium sightlines on the court

Getting Ready for Jimmy V Classic Game Day

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation goes a long way — especially in Midtown Manhattan near Penn Station, where pre-event foot traffic and postgame crowds can be intense.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Cellular service near large events can get congested on game days. Save them to your phone's wallet or screenshot them as a backup.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is the standard, and your phone is your entry. A portable battery pack is worth having.
• Arrive early. Doors typically open ahead of tip off (commonly 60–90 minutes prior). Give yourself extra time for entry and security, especially on high-demand dates.
• Public Transit: Madison Square Garden is directly above Penn Station and is served by NYC Subway A, C, E, 1, 2, 3 (34th St–Penn Station), plus LIRR, NJ Transit, and Amtrak.
• Rideshare: Plan your rideshare pickup point — post-event pickups can take longer than expected. Expect heavy traffic and designated curbside zones in the surrounding Midtown streets near Penn Station.
• Bag Policy: Madison Square Garden enforces a strict bag policy — small bags only (generally under 14"x14"x6"). Backpacks and larger bags are prohibited, and all bags are subject to search.
• Payment/Cashless: Madison Square Garden is cashless; credit/debit and mobile payments are accepted, with cash-to-card kiosks available.
• What to bring: Bring your mobile ticket, a valid ID, and a small permitted bag, and dress for an indoor arena.
