About Drake Football

Drake football has been part of the university’s athletic tradition since 1893, giving the Bulldogs a long-running place in Iowa’s college football landscape. Today, the program competes in NCAA Division I FCS as a non-scholarship team in the Pioneer Football League (PFL), and it has built a reputation as a consistent contender with multiple PFL championships, including title seasons such as 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2021. The program’s most significant historical figure is Johnny Bright, the star running back whose legacy remains central to Drake athletics.

Home games are played at Drake Stadium (Johnny Bright Field) in Des Moines, Iowa. Opened in 1925 and accommodating approximately 14,000 fans, the stadium is nationally recognized as the home of the Drake Relays—one of the premier track and field events in the United States. That multi-use design creates a classic layout where grandstand seating surrounds a running track and the football field, delivering a historic, intimate feel on Saturdays.

Within the Pioneer Football League, matchups against conference contenders can drive extra attention, including games versus the San Diego Toreros, Dayton Flyers, Davidson Wildcats, and fellow “Bulldogs” program Butler Bulldogs. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Drake Bulldogs Football tickets early is the smartest move.
