About Los Angeles Master Chorale

Founded in 1964 in Los Angeles, California, the Los Angeles Master Chorale is a professional choral ensemble known for classical and choral music that spans Renaissance polyphony, sacred masterworks, oratorio, and contemporary commissions. The group comprises around 100 professional singers and has become one of the leading professional choruses in the United States, with an identity shaped by ensemble precision, interpretive depth, and a wide-ranging commitment to the choral repertoire.

The Chorale is a founding resident company of the Los Angeles Music Center and has served as resident chorus of Walt Disney Concert Hall since the hall opened in 2003. Their work includes standard choral repertoire as well as ambitious new-music commissions and premieres, with Grammy Award recognition and nominations for recordings that have earned wide respect in the choral and classical community.

Their artistic profile includes celebrated productions such as David Lang's the little match girl passion and the immersive staging of Lagrime di San Pietro, directed by Peter Sellars. The ensemble remains active with an ongoing concert season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, presenting classical and contemporary choral programming while continuing to draw a strong Los Angeles subscriber base and concert-hall audience.

For listeners who value acoustic clarity, vocal blend, and thoughtfully programmed choral music, Los Angeles Master Chorale tickets offer access to one of the country's most respected professional vocal ensembles.

Why You Want to See Los Angeles Master Chorale Live

Seeing Los Angeles Master Chorale live is about hearing the full physical impact of a professional chorus in a room designed for detail. Their sound is built on a richly blended ensemble of roughly 100 voices, capable of shifting from intimate, transparent a cappella singing to the thunderous scale of symphonic choral music. In a concert hall setting, that dynamic range becomes part of the experience — every entrance, release, and harmonic color can be felt in real time.

Their concerts also stand out because of the repertoire itself. Programs may center on sacred classics, Renaissance works, holiday music, contemporary commissions, or large choral masterworks. Pieces associated with the ensemble include Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil, David Lang's the little match girl passion, Lassus' Lagrime di San Pietro, Handel's Messiah, and works by composers such as Lauridsen, Orff, Mozart, Verdi, Bernstein, Poulenc, and Britten.

The audience experience is attentive, discerning, and deeply engaged. Classical and choral music enthusiasts, arts patrons, and cultural subscribers come for performances where nuance matters. Select productions add staging, movement, and lighting direction, giving certain programs an immersive theatrical dimension beyond a standard concert presentation.

What to Expect at a Los Angeles Master Chorale Concert

A Los Angeles Master Chorale concert is typically a full concert-length performance, often around two hours including intermission depending on the program. The ensemble headlines its own programs and performs full concerts without a traditional support act, while some performances may include collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic or guest instrumentalists.

Setlists are usually organized around a central choral masterwork, theme, composer, or season. A program might draw from sacred classics, Renaissance repertoire, holiday programming, or contemporary commissions, with the music selected to create a complete concert arc rather than a collection of unrelated selections.

The atmosphere is refined and focused, especially at Walt Disney Concert Hall, where acoustic clarity is central to the experience. Listeners can expect a concert-hall setting where the smallest vocal details carry, from pristine a cappella passages to powerful ensemble climaxes.

Production varies by program. Many performances emphasize traditional concert-hall presentation and the natural sound of the chorus, while select works feature immersive staging, movement, and lighting direction, including productions associated with Peter Sellars.

Best Seats for a Los Angeles Master Chorale Concert

The right seat depends on what kind of show experience you're after:

• Best value: Upper-level or balcony seating — these sections can offer a broad view of the full ensemble and a strong concert-hall experience at a more accessible price
• Closest to the stage: Orchestra or main-floor seating — these seats put you closest to the performers and the visual detail of the presentation, especially for staged programs
• Best overall experience: Premium reserved hall seating — a balanced location can combine strong sightlines, acoustic clarity, and an excellent view of the full chorus
• For groups: Coordinate contiguous reserved seats early, since blocks in preferred concert-hall sections can disappear quickly for popular programs

Getting Ready for Show Night

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation makes the whole evening run smoother — from the parking lot to the final encore.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Cell service around theaters and music halls gets congested as show time approaches. Save your tickets to your phone's wallet or screenshot them before heading out so you're not searching at the gate.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is standard at most venues, and your phone is your entry. A portable battery pack is worth having for a full evening out.
• Arrive before the listed start time. Shows often begin at or near the listed start time — arriving on time means you're in your seat when the music starts.
• Check the venue's bag policy before you go. Individual venues set their own security guidelines; reviewing them before you leave home prevents delays at the entrance.
