About Western Illinois Leathernecks Women's Basketball

Western Illinois Leathernecks Women's Basketball competes at the NCAA Division I level and plays in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), which the program joined in 2023 after many years in the Summit League (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference). The Leathernecks have reached the NCAA Division I Women’s Tournament, including an appearance following a conference title during the Summit League era, and the program has posted multiple strong mid-major seasons with conference regular-season and tournament success.

A key part of Western Illinois’ identity is its “Leathernecks” nickname—recognized as the only NCAA Division I program nicknamed in honor of the U.S. Marine Corps. On game day, that pride shows up in the stands alongside the program’s “#GoNecks” and “#OneGoal” identity. Colonel Rock—a bulldog featured both live and in costume—is a staple of the Western Hall experience and a familiar presence around the arena.

The Leathernecks play their home games at Western Hall, a multi-purpose arena on the Western Illinois University campus in Macomb, Illinois. Opened in 1964 with an approximate capacity of 5,139, Western Hall offers an intimate mid-major environment where the student presence and local community support keep the building engaged throughout the game.

In the OVC, Western Illinois has developed conference matchups with programs such as the SIU Edwardsville Cougars and the Eastern Illinois Panthers, with the in-state meeting against Eastern Illinois carrying extra significance thanks to the schools’ proximity and shared Illinois roots. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Western Illinois Leathernecks Women's Basketball tickets early is the smartest move.
