About West Virginia Mountaineers Baseball

West Virginia Mountaineers baseball is a long-running NCAA Division I program that competes in the Big 12 Conference. Baseball has been played at WVU dating back to the late 1800s, with the program’s history spanning the Southern Conference, Big East, and today’s Big 12 era. In recent years, the Mountaineers have built a reputation as an increasingly consistent presence in the league standings, highlighted by a standout 44–16 season in 2025—one of the best campaigns in program history.

The modern rise is closely tied to major leaders in the dugout. Randy Mazey (head coach, 2013–2024) is credited with transforming WVU into an NCAA Tournament regular and guiding the program into Big 12 competition. Steve Sabins, a longtime assistant who ascended to head coach, has continued that upward trajectory. The program has also produced numerous MLB Draft picks, including notable alum John Means, who developed as a Mountaineer before his Major League career.

On game day, the Mountaineers play at Kendrick Family Ballpark (Monongalia County Ballpark), an intimate, modern venue opened in 2015 with an approximate capacity of 3,500. Located just north of Morgantown, it’s known for close sightlines and an atmosphere that gets especially lively during spring Big 12 weekend series. You’ll also see WVU traditions throughout the experience—from fans wearing Old Gold and Blue to the presence of The Mountaineer mascot, and the program-wide anthem “Country Roads” that helps define the Mountaineer fan culture.

Rivalry and marquee conference matchups can drive serious demand. WVU’s regional intensity with the Pittsburgh Panthers brings extra juice to “Backyard Brawl” baseball meetings, while Big 12 showdowns against programs like TCU, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech often carry major momentum implications. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing West Virginia Mountaineers Baseball tickets early is the smartest move.
