About Southern Utah Thunderbirds Basketball

Southern Utah Thunderbirds Basketball represents Southern Utah University at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The Thunderbirds have competed across multiple conference affiliations over the years, including the Mid-Continent Conference, the Summit League, the Big Sky Conference, and now the WAC. On the women’s side, the program reached a landmark moment by winning the WAC Tournament championship with a title-game victory over California Baptist to earn the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth.

Thunderbirds home games are played at the America First Event Center in Cedar City, Utah. Opened in 1985 and formerly known as the Centrum Arena, it’s an on-campus multipurpose arena that hosts Southern Utah basketball and other university events and was renamed under a naming-rights agreement. With an approximate capacity of 5,300, the setting is known for bringing the student body and Cedar City community close to the court.

Rivalry and regional matchups help define the schedule. Southern Utah’s in-state history includes a longstanding rivalry with the Weber State Wildcats, plus Utah matchups against the Utah Valley Wolverines and Dixie State / Utah Tech Trailblazers. In the WAC, games against conference opponents such as the Grand Canyon Antelopes and Northern Colorado Bears serve as key measuring-stick matchups. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Southern Utah Thunderbirds Basketball tickets early is the smartest move.
