About Northeastern State Riverhawks Football

Northeastern State Riverhawks Football competes at the NCAA Division II level as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The program’s history stretches back to the early 20th century and includes a successful NAIA era before moving to NCAA Division II. Along the way, Northeastern State has claimed two NAIA national championships, promoted 21 conference championships, and highlighted 98 All-Americans across its football history.

A major recent achievement came in 2025, when the RiverHawks were First Americans Bowl Champions—a meaningful connection point for a program that represents Tahlequah, the capital of the Cherokee Nation, and embraces regional heritage around key events.

On game days, the RiverHawks play at Doc Wadley Stadium in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. It’s an on-campus home for Northeastern State football with an approximate capacity of 7,500, creating a close-to-the-field setting that fits Division II football’s community-centered feel.

Conference play in the MIAA brings a steady slate of regional matchups, including games against fellow Oklahoma program Northwestern Oklahoma State and other in-conference opponents that carry local significance.
