About Minnesota Golden Gophers Hockey

Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s hockey is the University of Minnesota’s NCAA Division I program and a cornerstone of Big Ten Conference hockey. Established in 1920, the Gophers are one of the most successful programs in NCAA men’s hockey history, highlighted by five national championships (1974, 1976, 1979, 2002, 2003). From legendary coach Herb Brooks to icons like John Mayasich, Neal Broten, and Hall of Fame defenseman Phil Housley, Minnesota’s history is built on elite talent and a distinct “State of Hockey” identity.

Home games are played at 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis, Minnesota on the University of Minnesota campus. The arena opened in 1993 and holds approximately 10,000 fans, delivering a loud, passionate game-night environment with deep community support and a strong student-section presence. Named for former Gophers coach John Mariucci, the venue is also known for its traditionally Olympic/international-sized ice surface, a defining element of Minnesota hockey style.

In the Big Ten, rivalry games can be some of the most in-demand tickets on the calendar. Minnesota’s matchups with the Wisconsin Badgers—the marquee “Border Battle”—are among the fiercest in college hockey.
