About Florida A&M Rattlers Basketball

Florida A&M Rattlers men’s basketball competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The program has a long history within HBCU athletics and has captured conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances during its time in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), including a notable NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004 after earning the MEAC’s bid.

In 2021, Florida A&M moved from the MEAC into the SWAC, aligning the men’s basketball program with the conference FAMU’s football and other sports moved into. Across recent seasons, Robert McCullum served as head coach during the program’s transition period, and Patrick Crarey II has led the Rattlers in recent seasons.

At home, the Rattlers play at the Alfred Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium on Florida A&M’s campus in Tallahassee. Opened in 2006 and seating approximately 10,000, the arena is a multipurpose facility that also hosts commencements, concerts, and campus events — and it delivers a spirited basketball atmosphere shaped by student support and band-driven HBCU pageantry.
