About Charlotte Football

Charlotte football is one of the newest FBS programs in the country, launching its first varsity season in 2013. The 49ers compete at the NCAA Division I FBS level and play in the American Conference (after joining in 2023). A key milestone in the program’s early history came in 2019, when Charlotte reached its first bowl game—the Bahamas Bowl—and earned the first bowl victory in school history. Notable figures from the program’s early era include Brad Lambert (the program’s first head coach) and Will Healy (head coach from 2019–2022 who led the team to that 2019 bowl win).

Charlotte plays at Jerry Richardson Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, an on-campus stadium that opened in 2013. With an approximate capacity of 15,000, the venue delivers a close-to-the-field experience that keeps fans connected to every snap. The stadium is named for Jerry Richardson, the former Carolina Panthers owner and a major program benefactor, and it was designed with expansion capability as the program continues to grow.

In the American Conference, conference matchups can drive major interest across the schedule, and Charlotte also has developing rivalry-style matchups from its Conference USA era—especially against Old Dominion and Florida Atlantic. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Charlotte 49ers tickets early is the smartest move.

Getting Ready for Charlotte 49ers Game Day

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation goes a long way — especially with on-campus traffic and tailgating activity around the stadium.

• Rideshare: Use the designated rideshare pickup/drop-off zones set up on campus for gamedays.
• Check the bag policy before you go so there are no surprises at the entrance. Charlotte follows a clear-bag policy, allowing only clear plastic bags within size limits and small clutch bags.
