About North Alabama Football

North Alabama football traces its program history to 1949, when the school was known as Florence State, and the Lions remain one of the most storied small-college programs in the region. The Lions are now NCAA Division I FCS members in the United Athletic Conference, and they carry a proud championship standard from their Division II era, including three Division II national championships (1993, 1994, 1995) under head coach Bobby Wallace. Key figures tied to the program’s identity include Wallace, legendary alumnus Harlon Hill (namesake of the Harlon Hill Trophy), Ronald McKinnon, and Janoris Jenkins.

On Saturdays in Florence, the Lions play at Braly Municipal Stadium, a historic municipal Stadium that opened in 1948 and seats approximately 14,000 fans. Braly is known for its deep ties to championship football, including its longtime role as a host site for the NCAA Division II National Championship game during the “Camellia Bowl” era, helping make Florence a recognized hub of small-college championship football.

North Alabama’s rivalry history is anchored by regional matchups, especially Jacksonville State, a longtime rival dating back to shared Gulf South Conference days. As the Lions continue to establish themselves at the FCS level in the United Athletic Conference, conference opponents are also forming new, high-interest matchups. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing North Alabama Lions tickets early is the smartest move.
