About Whittemore Center Arena

Whittemore Center Arena is an indoor multi-purpose arena at the University of New Hampshire, located at 128 Main St in Durham, NH. The arena opened in 1995 within the broader Whittemore Center and UNH athletic complex, which has earlier roots, and it is owned and operated by the University of New Hampshire. Its capacity is approximately 6,500–7,000 for hockey, with configurations that adjust for concerts and other events.

Known locally as “The Whitt,” Whittemore Center Arena is home to the New Hampshire Wildcats men’s ice hockey and women’s ice hockey programs, both NCAA Division I teams in Hockey East. The building also hosts other UNH athletics and recreation events, concerts, university commencement and ceremonies, trade shows, community and campus events, and public ice-skating sessions.

Its Olympic-sized ice sheet, recent ice sheet, refrigeration, and glass renovations, and energetic college-hockey environment make Whittemore Center Arena one of New England’s notable campus hockey facilities.

Location & Transportation

Whittemore Center Arena is located at 128 Main St, Durham, NH 03824 — on the University of New Hampshire campus in the compact college town of Durham.

Driving and Parking: On-campus parking lots serve the arena, and most lots are within walking distance of the venue. Campus lots can fill around major events and game days, and parking rules are tied to UNH campus policies, so arriving early is especially helpful for popular Wildcats hockey matchups and larger campus events.

Transit: The Durham–UNH train station on Amtrak’s Downeaster line is nearby, offering service to Boston, Portland, and points between. UNH Wildcat Transit and regional bus routes also serve the campus, making transit a practical option for guests traveling into Durham without a car.

Rideshare: Rideshare drop-off and pickup are available along Main Street and adjacent campus access points. After the event, expect some congestion on Durham’s compact campus street grid as fans, students, and rideshare vehicles leave at the same time.

Nearby Accommodation: Lodging in Durham itself is limited. More hotel options are found in nearby Dover, Portsmouth, and Newmarket, all a short drive from the UNH campus.

Venue Navigation

Whittemore Center Arena is arranged around a full Olympic-sized ice sheet, so understanding the single-bowl layout can help you choose seats and move efficiently once inside. Guests enter from the campus side of Main Street into concourse areas that serve the seating bowl.

Entrances and Access: Main entrances front onto the UNH campus along Main Street. From there, guests enter into concourse areas surrounding the ice bowl before proceeding to their seating section.

Seating Levels: Whittemore Center Arena uses a single-bowl seating arrangement around the rink, with sideline and end seating sections surrounding the Olympic-sized ice sheet. The concourse serves the seating areas throughout the arena.

Accessibility: Accessible seating and services are available consistent with UNH campus ADA accommodations.

Dining Options

Inside Whittemore Center Arena

Standard arena concessions are available at games and events inside Whittemore Center Arena. For popular hockey games and larger events, building extra time into your arrival can help you avoid the busiest concession windows around puck drop, showtime, and intermissions.

Outside the Venue — Main Street and Downtown Durham

Downtown Durham’s Main Street area, adjacent to the UNH campus, offers restaurants, pizza spots, cafés, and bars catering to the university community within walking distance of the arena. For guests coming from outside Durham, nearby Portsmouth, Dover, and Newmarket also provide additional dining options before or after an event.

Security & Policies

Whittemore Center Arena maintains security and venue policies that are updated regularly and may vary by event. Before attending, reviewing the current policy on the venue's official website is strongly recommended.

Bag Policy: Bag restrictions typically apply and vary by event. Smaller bags are generally permitted subject to inspection, with policies following UNH event guidelines.

Commonly Prohibited Items: Weapons, outside food and drink, and other commonly restricted items are typically not permitted. Other items deemed a safety risk may also be restricted depending on the event.

Entry Procedures: Expect bag checks and digital ticket verification at entry, consistent with standard arena and UNH event procedures. Arriving with a compliant bag and pre-downloaded tickets helps speed up the process.

How Much Do Tickets to Whittemore Center Arena Cost?

Whittemore Center Arena ticket prices vary significantly depending on the type of event, the artist or team, seating section, and demand — which is what you'd expect from a venue that hosts everything from public campus events to Hockey East rivalry games and concerts.

For UNH Wildcats hockey, pricing is typically modest by college-athletics standards. General seats can often start in the single or low double digits, while higher-demand rivalry games, ranked Hockey East matchups, and better seat locations can push prices higher.

For concerts and special events, prices vary by act, event configuration, demand, and seat location. Floor or lower-bowl areas can command more for popular events, while end sections and upper rows often provide more budget-friendly options when available.

Buying earlier generally secures better seat selection for marquee games and popular events. As inventory shrinks and the event date approaches, the best remaining sections can become more expensive, especially for rivalry hockey games and high-demand campus events.

Whittemore Center Arena Seating Guide

Whittemore Center Arena’s seating layout is worth reviewing before buying because the bowl surrounds an Olympic-sized ice sheet, which is wider than NHL-standard ice. That rink size influences both the style of hockey played at The Whitt and the way fans experience sightlines from the sideline and end sections.

Best Seats at Whittemore Center Arena

• Best value: End sections and upper rows typically offer the most affordable seating while still keeping you in the energy of the arena.
• Closest to the action: Lower rows along the glass and at center ice put you nearest to the pace, collisions, and movement of college hockey.
• Best overall experience: Center-ice sideline sections provide the strongest overall view of the ice, balancing full-rink perspective with proximity to the action.
• For groups: For high-demand rivalry games and popular events, buying earlier helps groups secure seats together before contiguous options become harder to find.

Getting Ready for Your Whittemore Center Arena Event

Once your tickets are confirmed, a few practical preparations make your visit run significantly smoother — especially at a campus arena where game-day parking, compact streets, and cool rink temperatures can shape the experience.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Save your tickets to your phone's wallet or screenshot them before departing so you're ready at the arena entrance without needing a signal.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is standard, and your phone is your entry. A portable battery pack is worth having for a full evening.
• Arrive early. Arrive early for popular games, since campus lots can fill and downtown Durham streets are compact.
• Wear the right footwear. The interior arena is climate-controlled, but the building is centered around an ice rink, so plan for a cool indoor environment near the ice.
• Dress in layers. As an ice arena, interior temperatures run cool near the rink. Layers make it easier to stay comfortable throughout the game or event.
• Build extra time into your transit plan. For high-demand games and events, allow time for campus parking, Main Street congestion, and the walk from nearby lots.
• Check the bag policy in advance. Reviewing the venue's guidelines before packing prevents delays at security.
