About Von Braun Center Playhouse

Von Braun Center Playhouse is a theater inside the larger Von Braun Center at 700 Monroe St. in downtown Huntsville, Alabama. The Von Braun Center complex opened in 1975 and is named for rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, reflecting Huntsville’s “Rocket City” aerospace heritage. The complex is owned by the City of Huntsville and operated as part of the Von Braun Center, with the Playhouse offering an intimate seated setting of approximately 500 seats.

The Playhouse is used for Broadway touring productions, plays, ballet and dance, symphony and chamber performances, children’s and family theater, recitals, and smaller performing arts events. Resident presenters include Broadway Theatre League, which brings touring Broadway productions to Huntsville, and Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater & Academy, which stages seasonal shows for young audiences and families.

As a well-regarded performance theater within Huntsville’s main civic entertainment complex, the Playhouse is known for bringing audiences close to the stage in a setting suited to theater, children’s productions, dance, and recital-style events.

Location & Transportation

Von Braun Center Playhouse is located at 700 Monroe St., Huntsville, AL 35801 — inside the Von Braun Center complex in downtown Huntsville.

Driving and Parking: Most attendees arrive by car. On-site and adjacent parking is available at the Von Braun Center, including surface lots and the VBC parking area off Monroe Street. Downtown street and garage parking also supplement the complex on busy event nights, especially when multiple events are taking place in the larger Von Braun Center halls.

Transit: The Huntsville Shuttle bus system serves downtown Huntsville, but public transit options are limited around the Von Braun Center. For many visitors, driving, rideshare, or staying nearby is the most practical way to reach the Playhouse.

Rideshare: Uber and Lyft operate in Huntsville, with drop-off and pickup along the Von Braun Center’s Monroe Street frontage. After popular performances, allowing extra time for rideshare pickup can make departure smoother.

Nearby Accommodation: Several downtown Huntsville hotels are within walking distance or a short drive of the Von Braun Center. Lodging is clustered around the complex and the adjacent Embassy Suites by Hilton Huntsville, with additional hotel options throughout the downtown core.

Venue Navigation

Von Braun Center Playhouse is part of the larger Von Braun Center complex, so understanding the layout before arriving helps first-time visitors move from the main building into the theater efficiently. The Playhouse is an intimate single-house theater, with seating oriented toward the stage.

Entrances and Access: Guests access the Playhouse through the Von Braun Center complex on the Monroe Street side, entering through the VBC and proceeding inside to the Playhouse theater.

Seating Levels: The Playhouse uses single-level intimate theater seating facing the stage. With roughly 500 seats, the room is designed for close views of theatrical productions, children’s theater, dance, and recital-style performances.

Accessibility: As part of the city-owned Von Braun Center, the facility provides ADA-accessible seating, parking, and restroom facilities.

Getting to Your Section: Staff and signage inside the Von Braun Center direct guests to the Playhouse and to seating. Because the theater sits within a larger event complex, reading directional signage and arriving early are helpful on nights with concurrent events elsewhere in the building.

How Much Do Tickets to Von Braun Center Playhouse Cost?

Von Braun Center Playhouse ticket prices vary widely depending on the type of event, the production, seating section, and demand — which is what you'd expect from a venue that hosts everything from children’s and family theater to touring Broadway productions.

Children’s and family theater tickets are typically on the lower end, often around $15–$35 depending on the production and seat location. These events can be a strong value for families looking for live theater in an intimate downtown Huntsville setting.

Broadway touring productions and performing arts events are typically mid-range, often around $35–$90 or more depending on the production. Higher-demand titles, center-house seating, and the best remaining seats can push prices higher as the event approaches.

Buying earlier generally secures better seat selection for popular productions. As inventory shrinks and the date approaches, the best remaining seats are more likely to rise in price, especially for touring Broadway shows and high-demand family productions.
