About Carmichael Arena

Carmichael Arena is an indoor collegiate athletics venue located at 310 South Road on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. It opened in 1965 as Carmichael Auditorium and was renamed Carmichael Arena following a renovation completed in 2009. Owned and operated by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the arena has a capacity of approximately 8,000, with a compact bowl that keeps fans close to the competition.

The venue is home to the North Carolina Tar Heels Women's Basketball, Women's Volleyball, Gymnastics, and Wrestling programs. It also hosts university events and occasional campus functions, making it an important gathering place for UNC athletics and student life. Carmichael Arena has deep basketball history: UNC men's basketball played here from 1965 to 1986 before moving to the Dean Smith Center, and the building is remembered as the college home court for Michael Jordan, James Worthy, and Sam Perkins during the early-1980s Tar Heel era.

Known historically as Carmichael Auditorium and nicknamed “The Blue Heaven,” Carmichael Arena retains a historic feel while serving today's UNC Olympic sports and women's basketball programs in an intimate, high-energy setting.

Location & Transportation

Carmichael Arena is located at 310 South Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 — in the core of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus among academic halls and campus walkways.

Transit: Chapel Hill Transit serves the UNC campus with fare-free bus routes throughout town and campus. Multiple routes stop near South Road and central campus, making transit practical for students, local attendees, and fans staying nearby.

Driving and Parking: Because Carmichael Arena sits in the center of campus, parking is limited and often restricted. Nearby lots and decks may require a walk, and campus parking rules are enforced. Arriving early is a smart move, especially for higher-demand games and campus event nights.

Rideshare: Rideshare drop-off and pickup are practical around the campus perimeter and South Road. After the event, expect some congestion as fans, students, and campus traffic move through the same area.

Nearby Accommodation: Lodging options are available in downtown Chapel Hill near Franklin Street and along the US 15-501 corridor toward Durham. Additional hotels can be found throughout the broader Research Triangle.

Venue Navigation

Carmichael Arena uses a compact single-bowl layout surrounding the court, which makes it easier to understand than larger multi-level arenas. Planning ahead still helps, especially because most attendees walk across campus from parking, transit stops, or nearby drop-off points.

Entrances and Access: Main entrances front the campus grounds near South Road. The arena is set among academic buildings, so most guests should expect a walk from parking or campus perimeter drop-off areas before reaching the entrances.

Seating Levels: Seating is arranged in a single-tier bowl around the court, with sideline and baseline sections on multiple sides. The close-in design creates a strong sense of proximity throughout the arena.

Accessibility: Accessible seating and services are available consistent with UNC campus facilities. Guests using accessible services should allow time to navigate campus pathways and entry screening.

Getting to Your Section: Once inside, the intimate bowl layout makes sections easy to locate. Staff and signage direct guests, and the main practical factor is the walk from parking across campus before entering the arena.

Dining Options

Outside the Venue — Franklin Street and Downtown Chapel Hill

Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill offers a dense concentration of restaurants, bars, and casual dining spots within walking distance of campus. For many Carmichael Arena events, eating before or after the game near Franklin Street is one of the easiest ways to build a full Chapel Hill outing around your visit.

Security & Policies

Carmichael Arena maintains security and venue policies that are updated regularly and may vary by event. Before attending, reviewing the current policy on the venue's official website is strongly recommended.

Bag Policy: UNC Athletics typically enforces a clear-bag policy at ticketed athletic events. Bag size limits apply, with exceptions generally made for small clutch bags and medical or diaper bags.

Commonly Prohibited Items: Commonly restricted items include weapons, outside food and drink, professional cameras, noisemakers, and large bags, consistent with UNC Athletics policy.

Entry Procedures: Expect bag checks, security screening, and digital or mobile ticket verification at entry. Arriving with a compliant bag and pre-downloaded tickets helps keep the line moving.

How Much Do Tickets to Carmichael Arena Cost?

Carmichael Arena ticket prices vary significantly depending on the type of event, the team or matchup, seating section, and demand — which is what you'd expect from a venue that hosts everything from regular Olympic sports events to marquee conference matchups.

For regular women's basketball, women's volleyball, and Olympic sports events, tickets can start low, often around $10–$25. Baseline, corner, and upper-row areas are commonly among the more affordable options.

For marquee or conference matchups, prices are typically higher and can reach $30 or more. Rivalry games, stronger opponents, and high-demand dates can push prices upward, especially for lower rows and center-court sideline seats.

Buying earlier generally provides better seat selection for higher-demand games. As inventory shrinks and the date approaches, prices for the best remaining sections often rise, while the widest mix of affordable seats is usually easier to find earlier in the buying window.
