Show Information

Escape to Margaritaville began with a pre-Broadway world premiere in May 2017 at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California, before opening on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre in New York City on March 15, 2018. The musical features music and lyrics by Jimmy Buffett, with a book by Greg Garcia and Mike O'Malley. The Broadway production was directed by Christopher Ashley, with choreography by Kelly Devine.

The show is a jukebox musical comedy built around an original story that weaves Jimmy Buffett's songs into a tropical island romance. Escape to Margaritaville is closed on Broadway, but it has continued through national touring engagements and is widely licensed for regional, stock, and community theater productions. The show runs approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes and includes one intermission.

Escape to Margaritaville marked the first stage musical built around Jimmy Buffett's catalog, extending his Margaritaville brand and Parrothead culture to Broadway. The Broadway run began previews on February 16, 2018, opened March 15, 2018, and closed July 1, 2018, after 29 previews and 124 regular performances. Following Broadway, the musical launched a North American national tour beginning in fall 2019 and became a popular title for theaters staging upbeat, crowd-pleasing musical comedies.

Story Summary

Escape to Margaritaville is set in the present day at a run-down tropical island resort known as Margaritaville, with a brief detour to Cincinnati. At the center of the story is Tully, a laid-back singing bartender who charms vacationing guests with easy confidence and island breezes. His routine shifts when he meets Rachel, an ambitious environmental scientist visiting the resort with her best friend Tammy, a bride-to-be looking for a getaway before married life begins.

As Tully and Rachel grow closer, the musical follows a classic vacation-romance setup through Buffett's sun-soaked worldview. Brick, a sweet and slow-witted bartender, and J.D., a one-eyed island regular, add comic color to the resort community. The island atmosphere promises escape, but the characters are also pulled toward real choices about love, responsibility, second chances, and what it means to live fully without drifting away from the life waiting back home.

The story builds around the tension between paradise and reality, including a volcanic eruption that raises the stakes and turns island fantasy into a high-energy theatrical moment. No prior knowledge is required; Escape to Margaritaville stands on its own, though Jimmy Buffett fans will recognize the hits woven throughout, and its themes of love, adventure, and finding balance land easily for adult and teen audiences.

Story Highlights

Escape to Margaritaville uses Jimmy Buffett's songbook to turn familiar favorites into romantic beats, comic set pieces, and full-theater party moments.

• "Margaritaville" — Jimmy Buffett's signature anthem is the show's centerpiece, capturing the carefree island philosophy that gives the musical its name and spirit. On stage, it anchors the tropical world of the resort and invites the audience into the musical's vacation mindset.
• "Cheeseburger in Paradise" — This buoyant production number celebrates simple indulgent pleasures with the show's signature sense of fun. It is one of the musical's most crowd-pleasing moments, especially for fans who know Buffett's playful approach to everyday joy.
• "Come Monday" — A tender romantic ballad, "Come Monday" helps underscore the developing relationship between Tully and Rachel. The song brings a softer emotional current to the musical's beach-bar comedy.
• "Fins" — An audience-participation favorite, "Fins" is known for its iconic "fins up" hand gesture. It gets the whole house moving and turns the theater into a shared Parrothead-style celebration.
• "Volcano" — Staged around the island's eruption, "Volcano" transforms a Buffett classic into a dramatic, high-energy set piece. The sequence gives the production one of its biggest visual and musical bursts.
• "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" — This toast-to-good-times number embodies the show's escapist party atmosphere. It leans into the musical's breezy, carefree mood and gives audiences another familiar sing-along moment.
• "A Pirate Looks at Forty" — This reflective song weighs youthful adventure against the passage of time. It adds a thoughtful note to the show's broader themes of living in the moment while recognizing where life has taken you.

Escape to Margaritaville Seating Guide

Escape to Margaritaville is performed in traditional theater venues for touring, regional, stock, and community productions, so seating layouts can vary by city and venue. Where you sit shapes how close you feel to the island-resort setting, the choreography, and the full-stage party atmosphere.

Best Seats for Escape to Margaritaville

The best seats depend on whether you want the closest view of the performers, the widest look at the staging, or the strongest value.

• Best value: upper mezzanine or rear orchestra sections — These seats typically offer a clear view of the full stage while keeping you farther from premium front-section pricing.
• Closest to the stage: front orchestra sections — Choose these if you want to feel close to the singers, dancers, comic moments, and tropical staging.
• Best overall experience: mid-orchestra or front mezzanine sections — These areas usually provide the best balance of proximity and full-stage perspective, making them a favorite for musical theater fans.
• For groups: coordinate contiguous seats early, since blocks in popular sections sell through quickly, especially for weekend performances and local productions with strong fan interest.

Getting Ready for Show Night

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation makes the full experience run smoothly from arrival through the final bow.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Cell service around the venue can be congested on busy performance nights. Save your tickets to your phone's wallet or screenshot them before heading out so you're ready at the door without needing a signal.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is standard at most theaters. A portable battery pack is worth having, especially if you're combining the show with dinner or other activities.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain. Venue doors open well before the show begins; arriving early gives you time to find your seats and settle in before the house lights go down — and avoids the disruption of late seating, which many theaters restrict.
• Plan for the intermission. Escape to Margaritaville runs approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes and includes one intermission, so expect concession and restroom lines to build quickly once the act break begins.
• Know the venue's phone and photography policy. Photography and video recording are not permitted during the performance, consistent with professional theatrical productions. Silence your phone before the show begins so everyone can enjoy the music and comedy without distraction.
• For families, review the tone before bringing younger theatergoers. Escape to Margaritaville is a lighthearted adult comedy with some mild innuendo and references to drinking, and it is generally geared toward adult and teen audiences.
