About Virginia Commonwealth Rams Basketball

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Rams have built a national reputation as a consistent NCAA Division I contender in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10). VCU’s defining modern achievement is the 2011 NCAA Tournament run, when the Rams advanced from the First Four all the way to the Final Four under head coach Shaka Smart—an improbable run that helped cement the program’s “Havoc” identity built around aggressive, high-pressure defense. Along the way, VCU has produced standout names such as Shaka Smart, Eric Maynor, Larry Sanders, Briante Weber, Treveon Graham, Jeff Capel III, and Gerald Henderson.

On campus in Richmond, the Rams play at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, a downtown/Monroe Park Campus venue that opened in 1999 and holds approximately 7,600 fans. Known for its electric atmosphere and near-perennial sellouts, the arena’s compact design amplifies noise and intensity—especially with the energy of the student section and the nationally recognized Peppas pep band driving the pace from start to finish.

In the Atlantic 10, conference games can spike demand quickly—especially when longtime rivals come to town. The Rams’ fiercest rivalry is the University of Richmond Spiders, a cross-town matchup that consistently delivers high stakes and a charged environment. Other notable rivalries include George Mason, Dayton, and regional history with Old Dominion. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Virginia Commonwealth Rams Basketball tickets early is the smartest move.
