About UMBC Retrievers Basketball

UMBC competes in NCAA Division I men’s basketball as a member of the America East Conference, and the program’s modern identity is forever linked to one of the sport’s most memorable moments. In the 2018 NCAA Tournament, the Retrievers made history by becoming the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed, topping Virginia 74–54. That run was powered by America East Conference Tournament success, and it created lasting program icons like Jairus Lyles, K.J. Maura, and key contributor Lasse Olesen, with Ryan Odom as the head coach who orchestrated the breakthrough.

On campus in Catonsville, Maryland (in the Baltimore area), the Retrievers play at the UMBC Event Center (Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena). Opened in 2018 and built for a modern college experience, the approximately 5,000-seat arena is known for its close sightlines and an atmosphere where the student section can swing momentum. It’s a multipurpose building that hosts basketball as well as concerts and campus events, making it a central game-day destination.

Within the America East, matchups against programs like the Vermont Catamounts can carry extra weight, especially with conference tournament implications in play. UMBC also has a nearby in-state connection to the Maryland Terrapins, though those meetings are rare, and league games against the UMass Lowell River Hawks and Albany Great Danes bring plenty of competitive edge. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing UMBC Retrievers Basketball tickets early is the smartest move.
