About South Dakota Coyotes Football

South Dakota Coyotes football traces its roots back to 1889 and competes today at the NCAA Division I FCS level in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC). After a successful era at the Division II level in the North Central Conference, the program completed its transition to Division I in 2012 and has continued building momentum in one of the toughest conferences in the subdivision. Recent seasons have included multiple trips to the FCS playoffs, with 2023 standing out as a breakthrough run that ended with South Dakota ranked among the top teams in the FCS.

The Coyotes have featured standouts like Chris Streveler, a quarterback who starred at South Dakota before a pro career in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and time in the NFL. The roster has also included all-conference contributors such as Dakarai Allen and Mason Lampton, reflecting the physical, competitive identity the program has developed in MVFC play.

On game day, the Coyotes take the field at DakotaDome on the University of South Dakota campus in Vermillion, South Dakota. Opened in 1979 and renovated in 2016 with a new roof and climate system, the dome creates a loud, weather-proof atmosphere that can feel especially intense for big conference matchups. With an approximate football capacity of 10,000, the setting keeps fans close to the action and amplifies crowd noise to help build a true home-field advantage.

South Dakota’s biggest demand spikes come with rivalry and regional matchups — especially the in-state showdown with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, played for the Dakota Marker, plus conference battles against North Dakota State and regional meetings with North Dakota. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing South Dakota Coyotes Football tickets early is the smartest move.
