About Lamar Football

Lamar Cardinals football competes at the NCAA Division I FCS level as a member of the Southland Conference. The program began play in 1951, was discontinued following the 1989 season, and returned in 2010, bringing Cardinal football back to Beaumont after a long break. Across its earlier Division I-AA era, Lamar won Southland Conference championships and reached the NCAA Division I-AA (FCS) playoffs, helping shape the program’s tradition.

On the field, Lamar’s history includes standouts like Eric Benson, a former Cardinal who went on to the NFL, along with Ray Alborn, one of the coaches associated with the program’s earlier successful eras. The program has also produced several NFL draft picks during its earlier decades, and the modern era has continued the work of rebuilding and developing at the FCS level.

Home games are played at Provost Umphrey Stadium in Beaumont, Texas. Opened in 2010 on the site of the former Cardinal Stadium (which dated to 1964), the on-campus stadium seats approximately 16,000 and creates a close-to-the-field atmosphere that fits FCS football well. The Lamar University Spirit program, cheer, and marching band tradition (“The Pride of Southeast Texas”) help drive the crowd energy, with Big Red leading fan engagement throughout game day.

In the Southland, regional matchups help set the tone for the season — especially games against the Sam Houston Bearkats, Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, McNeese Cowboys, and Nicholls Colonels. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Lamar Cardinals Football tickets early is the smartest move.
