About Lamar Basketball

Lamar men’s basketball competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Southland Conference, with a Division I era dating to 1968–69. The Cardinals built a strong tradition in the late 1970s and early 1980s under head coach Billy Tubbs, including multiple NCAA Tournament appearances in that era and a notable Sweet 16 run in 1980. The program’s history also includes multiple Southland Conference regular-season and tournament championships.

Across the years, Lamar has featured standout names tied to some of its biggest moments, including coach Billy Tubbs, forward Clarence Kea, scorer Mike Olliver, and coach Pat Foster. The program has also produced players who advanced to professional basketball, adding to the legacy that fans celebrate each season.

Home games are played at the Montagne Center, an on-campus multipurpose arena that opened in 1984 and seats approximately 10,080. As one of the larger arenas in the Southland Conference, it’s known for a loud home-court environment when students and local Beaumont fans pack the bowl for major conference games and rivalry nights.
