About Emporia State Hornets Football

Emporia State Hornets football is a long-running NCAA Division II program that competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). With roots dating back to the 1890s, Emporia State is one of Kansas’s oldest collegiate football programs, and the Hornets have captured multiple MIAA conference championships across their history.

The program’s recent era includes longtime head coach Garin Higgins, who guided Emporia State through numerous seasons in the MIAA. In a conference known as one of the strongest in Division II football, the Hornets have shown they can rise to the moment—highlighted by a 2023 upset of No. 5 Northwest Missouri State, one of Division II’s dominant programs.

On game day, Hornets fans head to Welch Stadium—an on-campus venue in Emporia, Kansas that opened in 1936 and seats approximately 7,000. The setting is intimate and community-driven, with student support, homecoming activities, and the marching band helping bring Welch Stadium to life. You’ll also see plenty of black and gold in the stands, with Corky the Hornet adding to the atmosphere.
