About Canisius Golden Griffins Basketball

Canisius Golden Griffins basketball is an NCAA Division I program that has competed at the varsity level since the 1903–04 season and plays in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Golden Griffins have made four NCAA Tournament appearances, with their most recent trip coming in 1996, and the program’s defining national moment arrived in the 1950s with Elite Eight runs in 1955 and 1956. Across the decades, recognized figures tied to Canisius basketball include Tony Masiello, Hank Nowak, Larry Fogle, and longtime head coach Bob MacKinnon.

Home games are played at Koessler Athletic Center, an on-campus arena in Buffalo that opened in 1968 and holds approximately 1,800 fans. The compact layout creates a true “close to the action” feel, keeping the crowd right on top of the court and helping the building play loud when momentum swings. Canisius has also played select higher-profile and rivalry games at KeyBank Center in downtown Buffalo.

In the MAAC, the biggest demand spikes come when rivalries hit the schedule—especially against the Niagara Purple Eagles in the “Battle of the Bridge.” Regional matchups with the St. Bonaventure Bonnies and Buffalo Bulls are also part of Western New York’s broader college-basketball story through the Buffalo “Big 4” tradition. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Canisius Golden Griffins Basketball tickets early is the smartest move.
