About Austin Peay Governors Basketball

Austin Peay Governors basketball is an NCAA Division I program competing in the United Athletic Conference (UAC). The Governors nickname has represented the program since 1927, and the program has built a recognizable mid-major identity in the region with multiple Ohio Valley Conference regular-season and tournament championships during its long OVC tenure.

The Govs have reached the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament seven times, most recently in 2016, when they earned a spot in the field of 68 after a dramatic Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title as the No. 8 seed—one of the program’s signature achievements. Over the years, Austin Peay has been shaped by standout names such as James “Fly” Williams, Trenton Hassell, Drake Reed, and longtime head coach Dave Loos (1990–2017), the program’s winningest coach.

Home games are played at F&M Bank Arena, a modern multipurpose arena in downtown Clarksville that opened in 2022 and seats approximately 6,000 fans. The downtown setting helps bring the community and campus together, and the close, energetic atmosphere pairs perfectly with the program’s most famous tradition: the nationally recognized “Let’s Go Peay!” cheer that became iconic during the James “Fly” Williams era.
