Operated by Lake Superior State University, it seats approximately 3,000 fans, giving it the feel of a classic college hockey rink where the action stays close and the crowd is part of the experience.

The arena is best known as the home of the Lake Superior State University Lakers men's ice hockey program, an NCAA Division I team with a strong national tradition that includes NCAA championships in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Its event calendar centers on Lakers home games, with additional use for pickup hockey, skating, university athletics, and community events.

The venue is named for Clarence “Taffy” Abel, a Sault Ste. Marie native who became the first Native American to play in the NHL and to compete for the United States in Olympic ice hockey.

Dining Options

Outside the Venue — Sault Sainte Marie

Sault Sainte Marie offers dining options downtown and along the Ashmun Street corridor, with restaurants near the waterfront and the Soo Locks area. For Lakers hockey games, planning a meal before arriving on campus can make the evening easier, especially during cold-weather months when getting in and settled early is worthwhile.

Security & Policies

Taffy Abel Arena maintains security and venue policies that are updated regularly and may vary by event. Before attending, reviewing the current policy on the venue's official website is strongly recommended.

How Much Do Tickets to Taffy Abel Arena Cost?

Taffy Abel Arena ticket prices vary significantly depending on the type of event, the team or matchup, seating section, and demand — which is what you'd expect from a venue that hosts everything from university and community events to Lakers conference and rivalry games.

For Lake Superior State University Lakers college hockey, tickets are typically affordable and often fall in the low double digits per ticket. Opponent, matchup quality, conference importance, rivalry interest, and seat location can all affect the final price.

Buying earlier generally secures better seat selection, particularly for marquee or rivalry games. As inventory shrinks and the event date approaches, the best remaining seats can become harder to find.

Taffy Abel Arena Seating Guide

Taffy Abel Arena uses a traditional single-bowl arena layout surrounding the ice sheet, which makes proximity and viewing angle especially important when choosing seats. In a smaller college hockey arena, even upper or side seats can keep fans close to the pace and sound of the game.

Best Seats at Taffy Abel Arena

• Best value: General admission seating is common for college hockey games at venues of this size, offering flexibility for fans who want an affordable way into the building.
• Closest to the action: Lower rows directly along the glass put fans closest to the ice, the boards, and the speed of college hockey.
• Best overall experience: Center-ice seating along the sides typically offers the strongest all-around view, balancing sightlines, proximity, and the atmosphere of the arena bowl.
• General admission: When available, general admission seating gives fans more flexibility in choosing where to settle in for the game.
