Show Information

Two Gentlemen of Verona began in 1971 at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park as part of Shakespeare in the Park before transferring to Broadway at the St. James Theatre on December 1, 1971. Based on William Shakespeare's comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona, the musical features music by Galt MacDermot, lyrics by John Guare, and a book by John Guare and Mel Shapiro. Mel Shapiro directed the Broadway production, which was produced by Joseph Papp and The New York Shakespeare Festival.

The production is a rock musical with Latin, soul, and pop influences, carrying the free, communal atmosphere of Shakespeare in the Park onto the Broadway stage. The original Broadway run is closed, but the musical has continued to appear through regional, repertory, and university theater companies. Performances typically run approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and include one intermission.

Two Gentlemen of Verona won the 1972 Tony Award for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical for John Guare and Mel Shapiro. It also received the Drama Desk Award and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical. Its Best Musical win over Follies became one of the more famous Tony Award surprises, and the show has remained notable for its contemporary reimagining of Shakespeare through MacDermot's propulsive score and joyful ensemble spirit.

Story Summary

Two Gentlemen of Verona follows lifelong friends Valentine and Proteus as they leave their hometown of Verona for the wider world. Their bond is tested when both men fall in love with Silvia, setting the story in motion through romance, rivalry, and betrayal. Proteus pursues Silvia despite his friendship with Valentine and his own relationship with Julia, creating a tangled comic conflict that drives the musical forward.

The setting blends Shakespeare's Verona and Milan with a contemporary 1970s urban, multicultural sensibility. Alongside Valentine, Proteus, Silvia, and Julia, the story includes the Duke and comic servants such as Launce, adding humor and momentum to the romantic complications. The musical explores friendship versus romantic love, loyalty and betrayal, youthful desire, and reconciliation.

No prior familiarity with Shakespeare's play is needed. Two Gentlemen of Verona stands on its own as an accessible, high-spirited romantic comedy whose themes of friendship, love, and forgiveness land clearly for teen and adult audiences.

Story Highlights

Two Gentlemen of Verona is known for a score that brings Shakespeare's comedy into the language of rock, Latin rhythm, soul, and pop. These signature songs capture the musical's mix of romance, wit, and ensemble energy:

• "Love Has Driven Me Sane" — A memorable number that showcases Galt MacDermot's melodic rock sensibility. It reflects the show's ability to turn romantic confusion into bright, contemporary musical expression.
• "Night Letter" — A tender, lyrical highlight within the musical's broader high-energy world. The song adds warmth and emotional texture to the show's web of romantic longing and deception.
• "Who Is Silvia?" — A setting of Shakespeare's own lyric, reimagined within MacDermot's contemporary score. It connects the source material directly to the musical's rock-influenced sound.
• "Calla Lily Lady" — A standout number that showcases the production's Latin-flavored rhythms. Its style reflects the show's broader blend of musical idioms and theatrical exuberance.
• "Bring All the Boys Back Home" — An ensemble number that reflects the era's topical, communal spirit. It captures the large-cast energy and social pulse that helped define the production's Broadway identity.

Two Gentlemen Of Verona Seating Guide

Two Gentlemen Of Verona is staged periodically by regional, repertory, and university theater companies, so venue size and layout can vary by production. Where you sit shapes how closely you experience the performers, the ensemble staging, and the musical's energetic movement.

Best Seats for Two Gentlemen Of Verona

The best seats for Two Gentlemen Of Verona depend on whether you prefer proximity to the performers or a wider view of the full stage picture.

• Best value: Upper mezzanine or rear orchestra sections — These areas often provide a strong view of the full stage while keeping you at a comfortable distance for ensemble numbers.
• Closest to the stage: Front orchestra sections — These seats place you near the performers, making the comedy, vocals, and character interactions feel more immediate.
• Best overall experience: Mid-orchestra or front mezzanine sections — These sections typically offer the best balance of clear sightlines, musical impact, and full-stage perspective.
• For groups: Coordinate contiguous seats early, since blocks in popular sections can sell through quickly for regional and repertory productions with limited performance runs.

Getting Ready for Show Night

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation makes the full experience run smoothly from arrival through the final bow.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Cell service around the theater can be congested on busy performance nights. Save your tickets to your phone's wallet or screenshot them before heading out so you're ready at the door without needing a signal.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is standard at most theaters. A portable battery pack is worth having, especially if you're combining the show with dinner or other activities.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain. Theater doors open well before the show begins; arriving early gives you time to find your seats and settle in before the house lights go down — and avoids the disruption of late seating, which many theaters restrict.
• Plan for the intermission. The production runs approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and includes one intermission. Lines for concessions and restrooms can build immediately after the act break, so move early if you plan to leave your seat.
• Know the venue's phone and photography policy. Photography and recording are not permitted during the performance. Silence your phone before the show begins so the music, dialogue, and staging can be enjoyed without interruption.
• For teen and adult audiences. Two Gentlemen of Verona is generally suitable for teen and adult audiences and contains some mature themes and comic bawdiness. If you are attending with younger theatergoers, review the production details for your chosen performance before show night.
