Show Information

Hedwig and The Angry Inch opened Off-Broadway on February 14, 1998, at the Jane Street Theatre in New York City. The musical is an original work with a book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. Mitchell also originally developed and performed the title role, creating Hedwig as a ferocious, funny, and wounded rock singer whose concert becomes a confessional life story.

The show is a rock musical staged as a live concert, with Hedwig fronting the band The Angry Inch while speaking directly to the audience. Hedwig and The Angry Inch is approximately 90–100 minutes and is performed as a single continuous act with no intermission. While the Broadway production has closed, the musical continues to be licensed and performed by regional, touring, and international companies worldwide.

Hedwig and The Angry Inch began as a downtown rock-club act and became a landmark work of queer and transgender-themed musical theater. The original Off-Broadway production ran for 857 performances and won Obie and Outer Critics Circle awards. The musical was adapted into a 2001 film directed by and starring John Cameron Mitchell, which won the Audience Award and Best Director at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2014, Hedwig and The Angry Inch made its Broadway debut at the Belasco Theatre, ran for over a year, and won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, with Neil Patrick Harris winning Best Leading Actor in a Musical and Lena Hall winning Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

Story Summary

Hedwig and The Angry Inch is framed as a present-day rock concert, with Hedwig Robinson — born Hedwig Schmidt — taking the stage as an “internationally ignored song stylist.” As the music builds, Hedwig recounts a life that stretches from Communist East Berlin to the American Midwest, mixing autobiography, rock performance, comedy, and confrontation.

At the center of the story is Hedwig’s search for wholeness. She tells of growing up in divided Cold War–era Germany, undergoing a botched sex-change operation that leaves her with the “angry inch,” and falling into a turbulent relationship with Tommy Gnosis, a rock star who steals her songs and rises to the fame Hedwig desperately wanted. Alongside her is Yitzhak, Hedwig’s husband and backup singer, whose own presence adds tension, longing, and emotional depth to the performance.

The musical explores gender identity, love, betrayal, self-acceptance, and the search for an “other half.” Hedwig and The Angry Inch stands fully on its own and requires no prior familiarity to enjoy; its themes land through the force of the music, the intimacy of the storytelling, and the immediacy of live performance.

Story Highlights

Hedwig and The Angry Inch is driven by Stephen Trask’s live rock score, with songs that move from blistering punk energy to intimate confession and cathartic release.

• `"The Origin of Love"` — This emotional centerpiece retells Plato’s myth of soulmates split apart. It is one of the show’s most beloved and haunting ballads, giving musical shape to Hedwig’s longing for connection and wholeness.
• `"Wig in a Box"` — A rousing, singalong anthem about reinvention and resilience, this number captures Hedwig’s ability to transform pain into performance. It often becomes one of the most communal moments in the show, inviting the audience into Hedwig’s world.
• `"Tear Me Down"` — The explosive opening number introduces Hedwig with full rock-concert force. It also establishes the Berlin Wall metaphor that runs through the musical, connecting political division with personal fracture.
• `"The Angry Inch"` — This driving, darkly comic rock number recounts the operation that gives the show its title. Its mix of humor, shock, and hurt is central to the musical’s fearless storytelling style.
• `"Midnight Radio"` — The soaring finale builds into an anthem of liberation and self-acceptance. It is one of the production’s most cathartic moments, closing the show with emotional release and a sense of hard-won freedom.
• `"Wicked Little Town"` — A tender, melodic reflection that recurs across the show, this song helps connect Hedwig and Tommy’s story. Its gentler sound gives the musical space for vulnerability amid the rock intensity.

Getting Ready for Show Night

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation makes the full experience run smoothly from arrival through the final bow.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Cell service around the theater can be congested on busy performance nights. Save your tickets to your phone's wallet or screenshot them before heading out so you're ready at the door without needing a signal.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is standard at most theaters. A portable battery pack is worth having, especially if you're combining the show with dinner or other activities.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain. Theater doors open well before the show begins; arriving early gives you time to find your seats and settle in before the house lights go down — and avoids the disruption of late seating, which many theaters restrict.
• Plan for a 90–100 minute run with no intermission. Hedwig and The Angry Inch is performed as a single continuous act, so use the restroom, purchase concessions, and settle in before the show begins.
• Know the venue's phone and photography policy. Photography and recording are generally prohibited during the performance, and professional productions typically ask audiences to silence phones before the show starts.
• Plan for mature-audience content. Hedwig and The Angry Inch is intended for mature audiences and contains strong language, sexual content, and adult themes.
