Show Information

Hadestown: Teen Edition is a licensed full-length adaptation of the Broadway musical Hadestown, with music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell. The original Broadway production was developed with and directed by Rachel Chavkin, and the show draws from the ancient Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone.

The Teen Edition is designed for schools, youth theaters, and educational programs. It features adjusted vocal arrangements and transposed keys to better accommodate teen voices while keeping the complete arc of the musical intact. The production runs approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one intermission.

The source musical Hadestown opened on Broadway in 2019 and won eight 2019 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score for Anaïs Mitchell, and Best Direction of a Musical for Rachel Chavkin. Story Summary

Hadestown - Teen Edition takes place in a timeless world that blends Depression-era Americana with the industrial underworld of Hadestown. Orpheus, a gifted young musician, falls in love with Eurydice, a hungry and hardened young woman facing hardship aboveground. When the promise of survival draws Eurydice down to Hadestown, Orpheus sets out to bring her back.

The story also follows Hades, ruler of the underworld, and Persephone, his wife and the goddess of the seasons. Their strained relationship mirrors the journey of Orpheus and Eurydice, creating a layered musical about love, sacrifice, poverty, labor, hope, doubt, faith, and despair. Hermes serves as narrator and guide, framing the tale as an old song sung again.

No prior knowledge of Greek mythology or the Broadway production is needed. The musical is designed to stand on its own, with Hermes leading the audience through a story whose themes land clearly for older teens and adult audiences.

Story Highlights

Several signature songs help define the sound, emotion, and mythic atmosphere of Hadestown - Teen Edition:

• `"Road to Hell"` — Hermes' opening number introduces the world, the main characters, and the idea that this is an old story being sung again. It sets the tone for the musical's blend of myth, memory, and live storytelling.
• `"Any Way the Wind Blows"` — This song establishes Eurydice's difficult world and the harsh conditions that make Hadestown's promise so tempting. It gives the audience an early understanding of the hunger, instability, and survival instincts driving her choices.
• `"Wedding Song"` — A tender exchange between Orpheus and Eurydice, this number captures their early love and Orpheus's faith in a better world. It is one of the show's clearest expressions of hope.
• `"Why We Build the Wall"` — Hades and the workers of Hadestown deliver a chilling, chant-like anthem about fear and control. The song stands as one of the musical's major thematic centerpieces.
• `"Epic III"` — Orpheus sings the melody meant to remind Hades of his love for Persephone and move the underworld itself. It is a climactic musical moment centered on memory, compassion, and the power of song.
• `"Wait for Me"` — Orpheus begins his determined journey into the underworld in a soaring act of hope and devotion. The number is one of the show's most recognizable expressions of love in motion.
• `"Doubt Comes In"` — This tense sequence follows Orpheus and Eurydice as they attempt their escape. The song brings the musical's central test of faith into sharp emotional focus.

Hadestown - Teen Edition Seating Guide

Hadestown - Teen Edition is performed by schools, youth theater companies, and educational programs in theater venues that can vary by production. Where you sit shapes how close you feel to the performers, the staging, and the musical's intimate storytelling.

Best Seats for Hadestown - Teen Edition

The best seats depend on how close you want to be and how much of the full stage picture you want to take in:

• Best value: upper mezzanine or rear orchestra sections — These areas often provide a strong view of the full stage while keeping you farther from premium front-section pricing.
• Closest to the stage: front orchestra sections — These seats put you nearest the performers, which can make the vocals, character work, and emotional details feel especially immediate.
• Best overall experience: mid-orchestra or front mezzanine sections — These sections typically offer a strong balance of proximity and perspective, helping you follow both the storytelling and the staging.
• For groups: coordinating contiguous seats early is the best way to keep your party together, since blocks in popular sections sell through quickly.

Getting Ready for Show Night

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation makes the full experience run smoothly from arrival through the final bow.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Cell service around the venue can be congested on busy performance nights. Save your tickets to your phone's wallet or screenshot them before heading out so you're ready at the door without needing a signal.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is standard at most theaters. A portable battery pack is worth having, especially if you're combining the show with dinner or other activities.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain. Theater doors open well before the show begins; arriving early gives you time to find your seats and settle in before the house lights go down — and avoids the disruption of late seating, which many theaters restrict.
• Plan for the intermission. Hadestown - Teen Edition typically includes one intermission during its approximately 2-hour, 30-minute runtime. Lines for concessions and restrooms often build immediately after the act break, so planning ahead helps keep the evening relaxed.
• Know the venue's phone and photography policy. Audiences are typically asked not to record or photograph during the performance, and phones should be silenced before the show begins.
• For families. The show contains mature language, sexual themes, depictions of violence, and references to substance use, and it is generally recommended for older teens and adults rather than very young children.
