Story Summary

Set in the fictional community of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island in the late 19th to early 20th century, Anne of Green Gables follows Anne Shirley, a talkative, red-haired orphan girl whose arrival changes the lives of everyone around her. Anne is mistakenly sent to live with aging siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who had expected a boy to help on their farm. What begins as a practical mix-up becomes the start of a deeply meaningful family story.

Anne's imagination, mischief, and irrepressible spirit shape the world of the musical. As she builds relationships with Marilla, Matthew, Diana Barry, Gilbert Blythe, Rachel Lynde, and the wider Avonlea community, the story explores belonging, friendship, individuality, coming of age, and the search for a place to call home. The musical captures both the humor of Anne's outspoken personality and the tenderness of watching her grow from a spirited child into a young woman.

The musical stands fully on its own; no prior familiarity with Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel is needed to enjoy the show. Its themes of family, imagination, and finding where you belong land clearly for audiences of many ages and backgrounds.

Anne Of Green Gables Seating Guide

Anne Of Green Gables is closely associated with the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and may also appear in regional and professional theater venues through licensed productions. Where you sit shapes how you experience the songs, character moments, and full-stage picture of Avonlea.

Best Seats for Anne Of Green Gables

The best seats depend on whether you want close-up emotion, full-stage perspective, or the strongest value for your budget.

• Best value: Upper mezzanine or rear orchestra sections often provide a clear view of the stage while keeping you close to the full musical picture. These seats are especially appealing for theatergoers who want a balanced experience without choosing the highest-demand rows.
• Closest to the stage: Front orchestra sections put you nearest to the performers, making character expressions, choreography, and musical moments feel more immediate. These seats are ideal if you want to feel fully immersed in Anne's world.
• Best overall experience: Mid-orchestra and front mezzanine sections usually offer the strongest blend of proximity and sightline balance. Many fans prefer these areas because they let you take in both the intimate character work and the larger ensemble scenes.
• For families with young children: Sections with aisle access can make arrival, seating, and intermission movement easier. Since the show runs approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes with one intermission, choosing seats that make breaks and exits simple can help younger audience members stay comfortable.
• For groups: Coordinate contiguous seats early, since blocks in popular orchestra and mezzanine sections can sell through quickly for weekend, summer, and peak travel dates.

Getting Ready for Show Night

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation makes the full experience run smoothly from arrival through the final bow.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Cell service around the theater can be congested on busy performance nights. Save your tickets to your phone's wallet or screenshot them before heading out so you're ready at the door without needing a signal.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is standard at most theaters. A portable battery pack is worth having, especially if you're combining the show with dinner or other activities.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain. Theater doors open well before the show begins; arriving early gives you time to find your seats and settle in before the house lights go down — and avoids the disruption of late seating, which many theaters restrict.
• Plan for the intermission. Anne Of Green Gables typically includes one intermission, giving you time to stretch, visit concessions, and use the restroom. Lines can build quickly once the act break begins, so heading out promptly can help you make it back before the second act.
• Know the venue's phone and photography policy. Audiences are asked not to photograph or record during the performance. Silence your phone before the show begins so the music and story can unfold without distraction.
• For families. Anne Of Green Gables is appropriate for most ages and offers a warm, family-friendly theater experience. If attending with younger children, the full runtime and intermission are worth planning around before you arrive.
• Build time into your Charlottetown plan. The flagship summer production takes place at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, a popular seasonal tourist destination closely tied to the Anne of Green Gables story. Allow extra time for arrival, parking, dining, and navigating the area during busy summer periods.
