Show Information

Ailey II was founded in New York City in 1974 by Alvin Ailey, originally under the name Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble. Created as the second company of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater organization, it was designed to bridge the space between formal dance training and a professional performing career. The company pairs elite early-career dancers with emerging and established choreographers, giving audiences a direct look at the next generation of modern dance talent.

Ailey II is a contemporary and modern dance company performing mixed-repertory programs. Its repertory includes new commissioned works, repertory favorites, and pieces rooted in the Alvin Ailey tradition. The company is actively touring and performing, with annual New York seasons as well as national and international tour dates. Performances are typically about two hours and generally include one or two intermissions, depending on the program.

The company has earned wide praise for its “off-the-charts energy,” technical strength, and expressive young dancers. In 2024, Ailey II celebrated more than 50 years as a company, marking a major milestone for one of the longest-running second companies in American modern dance. Many Ailey II dancers have gone on to perform with the flagship Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, reinforcing the company’s role as a globally recognized launching pad for professional dance careers.

Story Summary

Ailey II Dance Company is a touring modern dance company built around curated mixed-repertory programs. Each performance brings together individual dance works that may include new commissions, repertory favorites, and choreography connected to the artistic heritage of Alvin Ailey. The evening is unified by the company’s athletic movement style, expressive range, and connection to modern dance, ballet, jazz, and African-American cultural traditions.

The experience changes across the program, moving through high-energy ensemble pieces, intimate solos and duets, and celebratory works that spotlight the dancers’ power and versatility. Some pieces emphasize speed, precision, and group momentum, while others draw the audience into quieter emotional moments through shape, stillness, and individual artistry.

Show Highlights

Ailey II programs vary by season and venue, but several signature elements define the company’s live performances:

• Repertory Works in the Ailey Tradition — Programs often include works that reflect the artistic heritage of Alvin Ailey. These pieces connect audiences to the broader Ailey legacy, celebrating African-American cultural experience through the language of modern dance.

• New Commissioned Works by Emerging Choreographers — Ailey II regularly premieres new work by rising choreographic voices. These commissions keep the company’s repertory current, forward-looking, and closely tied to the next generation of dance creation.

• High-Energy Ensemble Numbers — Full-company sections showcase the athleticism, technical precision, and “off-the-charts energy” associated with Ailey II. These moments often highlight unison movement, dynamic power, and the physical intensity of the company’s young dancers.

• Intimate Duets and Solos — Smaller-scale pieces give individual dancers space to show expressive detail and personal artistry. These sections can be especially memorable because they reveal the emotional range behind the company’s technique.

Ailey II Dance Company Seating Guide

Ailey II Dance Company performs in theater venues that can vary by city, tour stop, and season. Where you sit shapes the experience, especially for a dance performance where full-stage patterns, ensemble spacing, and individual movement details all matter.

Best Seats for Ailey II Dance Company

The best seats depend on whether you prefer an up-close view of the dancers or a wider look at the full choreography.

• Best value: upper mezzanine and rear orchestra sections — These seats often provide strong sightlines for dance while keeping more of the full-stage picture in view.
• Closest to the stage: front orchestra sections — Sitting close gives you a more immediate view of the dancers’ power, speed, and physical detail.
• Best overall experience: mid-orchestra and front mezzanine sections — These areas usually offer a strong balance of proximity and perspective, making them especially useful for ensemble choreography.
• For families with young children: aisle-access seats can make arrival and intermission movement easier, especially since performances are typically about two hours and may include one or two intermissions.
• For groups: coordinate contiguous seats early, since blocks in popular orchestra and mezzanine sections can sell through quickly.

Getting Ready for Show Night

Once your tickets are confirmed, a little preparation makes the full experience run smoothly from arrival through the final bow.

• Download your tickets before you leave. Cell service around your venue can be congested on busy performance nights. Save your tickets to your phone's wallet or screenshot them before heading out so you're ready at the door without needing a signal.
• Charge your phone fully. Digital ticketing is standard at most theaters. A portable battery pack is worth having, especially if you're combining the show with dinner or other activities.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain. Theater doors open well before the show begins; arriving early gives you time to find your seats and settle in before the house lights go down — and avoids the disruption of late seating, which many theaters restrict.
• Plan for the intermission. Ailey II Dance Company performances typically include one or two intermissions depending on the program, and lines for concessions and restrooms can build immediately after the act break.
• Know the venue's phone and photography policy. Photography and video recording are not permitted during the performance, as is standard for professional dance productions.
• For families. Ailey II is appropriate for most ages and can be a vibrant, accessible introduction to modern dance for newcomers and young audience members.
