About Lenoir-Rhyne Football

Lenoir-Rhyne football competes in NCAA Division II as a member of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), with a long-running program history that dates back to the 1920s era. The Bears have a national championship pedigree highlighted by the program’s 1960 NAIA National Championship, and they’ve also collected numerous SAC championships over the decades while building a reputation as a consistent conference contender.

The program’s tradition includes influential leadership such as Clarence Stasavich, an early coach closely associated with Lenoir-Rhyne’s championship-era success. Over its long history, Lenoir-Rhyne has produced standout players who reached professional football, helping shape a winning program that has compiled well over 560 career victories.

On game day, the Bears play at Moretz Stadium in Hickory, North Carolina, an on-campus venue with an intimate Division II setting and a loyal local and alumni following. With a capacity of approximately 8,500, the environment keeps you close to the action while still delivering the traditions fans expect—spirit squad, band, and the “Joe the Bear” mascot energizing the crowd in the school’s red and black.

In the SAC, rivalries can drive serious attention, especially against the Catawba Indians and the Carson-Newman Eagles, matchups that have often carried conference-title implications. Games versus Newberry, Wingate, and other SAC opponents round out a competitive schedule.
