About Howard Basketball

Howard competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), a league known for its deep HBCU basketball tradition. The Bison have made five NCAA Tournament appearances in men’s basketball, most recently in 2026, when Howard captured the 2026 MEAC Tournament championship to earn the conference’s automatic bid and return to the national stage.

Howard’s game-day identity is tightly connected to HBCU culture: spirited student participation, step and cheer energy, and the presence of the university’s “Showtime” marching band. That mix of tradition and crowd engagement is a big part of what makes Howard basketball in Washington, D.C., a unique live experience.

Burr Gymnasium — opened in 1963 — is Howard’s on-campus home for basketball, with a capacity of approximately 2,700. The setting creates an up-close, student-driven environment where the sound and momentum can swing quickly, especially in MEAC matchups.

Within the MEAC, Howard’s schedule features matchups that regularly bring extra edge and urgency. The Bison have traditional HBCU rivalries within the conference, with Morgan State and North Carolina Central among notable opponents. If there’s a specific rivalry game you’re targeting, browsing Howard Bison tickets early is the smartest move.
