About The Iao Theater

The Iao Theater is a historic performing arts venue located at 68 N Market St. in Wailuku, Hawaii. Opened in 1928, it has long served as a movie-and-stage theater in downtown Wailuku and is operated by Maui OnStage, the resident nonprofit community theater company. Its location in the walkable Market Street district places it within one of Wailuku’s most recognizable cultural corridors.

The venue hosts live theatrical productions, musicals, youth and teen stage productions, concerts and musical performances, community and cultural events, film screenings, and special programming including the ONO Series. Recent programming has included original and locally relevant works such as “ʻAinakea,” reflecting the theater’s role in supporting local storytelling and performance on Maui.

Regarded as a historic landmark of Wailuku, The Iao Theater was considered the most majestic performing arts center on Maui at the time of its inception and remains a cultural anchor for live performing arts on the island.

The Iao Theater has a straightforward downtown theater setup, with the main arrival point facing North Market Street. Understanding the venue’s street-facing access and downtown setting ahead of time makes arrival smoother, especially when parking in the surrounding Market Street district.

How Much Do Tickets to The Iao Theater Cost?

The Iao Theater ticket prices vary widely depending on the type of event, the artist or production, seating section, and demand — which is what you'd expect from a venue that hosts everything from free ONO Series events to mainstage plays and musicals.

For theatrical productions and musicals, tickets are commonly listed at approximately $10 to $45. Prices can vary by production type, seating location, and whether the event is a mainstage production or a community-focused performance.

For concerts and special series events such as the ONO Series, some events are offered free, while ticketed events vary by performance. Special programming, local interest, and artist demand can all influence availability and price.

Buying earlier generally secures better seat selection for popular productions in this intimate venue. As inventory shrinks and the performance date approaches, the best remaining seats can become harder to find.

The Iao Theater offers a seated performance experience centered on the stage. Before buying, it helps to compare available seats by distance from the performance, sightline, and price so the tickets you choose match the kind of night you want.

Best Seats at The Iao Theater

• Best value: Higher seating areas can offer a strong overall view of the stage at a more accessible price point, especially for plays, musicals, and community productions.
• Closest to the action: Seats nearer the stage place you close to the performers and work well for theatergoers who want maximum proximity to the production.
• Best overall experience: Mid-range seats centered to the stage often provide a balanced mix of sightline, distance, and atmosphere for live theater and concerts.
