Like many modern venues, Heinz Hall originated as a 1920s movie house, converted to talkies, outlived its usefulness, was scheduled for demolition and saved at the last minute.

Rather than a historical or architectural society, Heinz Hall was rescued by the Pittsburg Symphony Orchestra. In need of a new venue, Restoration went on from 1967 to 1973. In 1982 an annex was added with a spacious garden plaza giving the symphony hall a lovely setting.

The last renovation (so far) was completed in 1992, when the interior was given a facelift, better acoustics, and improved heating and air conditioning. Far from being stuffy and staid many of the offerings at the hall have mass appeal.

Tickets are only a click away on the viewable calendar. Education is also a priority with “Tiny Tots” programs and events for school children like “Meet the Orchestra.”
