Located in the heart of downtown San Francisco, the Fillmore District has been a cultural landmark of the bay area for over a century. The district was created in the 1880s to house a rapid influx of citizens migrating to the California coast. It expanded exponentially after the infamous 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, as the area remained largely untouched by the travesty. After this stroke of luck, the area became a booming center for the performing arts, housing many African-American, Jewish, and Chinese-Americans. The area took quickly to the development of jazz music, and housed later concerts to bands like Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead in its auditorium. Although there was a brief period of time during the 1960s in which the music scene in the area died down, the place was revived in the 1990s, undergoing gentrification of a new Jazz District, in which many bars, clubs, and restaurants opened up in the theme of past entertainment hotspots. Many of these places, along with new condominiums opening up consistently are fairly upscale, and offer a luxurious taste of modern San Francisco living.
